A defining moment during his training at the University of Michigan Medical School set Dr. Justin LaReau on the path to orthopedic surgery. Assisting in a complex joint reconstruction, he saw firsthand how surgery could restore mobility and quality of life. “Seeing the patient’s ability to regain mobility and quality of life after surgery had a profound impact on me,” he says. “The ability to help people move again is incredibly rewarding.”

That perspective continues to shape his approach today. Dr. LaReau prioritizes open communication and realistic expectations, taking time to understand each patient’s concerns and goals. By clearly explaining procedures, recovery timelines, and potential risks, he ensures patients feel informed, comfortable, and actively involved in their care.

Advancements in minimally invasive and robotic-assisted procedures have further enhanced patient outcomes. Techniques such as anterior hip replacement and MAKO-assisted knee replacement allow for greater precision, less disruption to surrounding tissue, and often faster recovery times. While these innovations are important, Dr. LaReau emphasizes that individualized care remains the foundation of successful treatment. “Every patient’s body and lifestyle are different, so I create a treatment plan tailored to their needs,” he explains.

Recovery is not always predictable, and Dr. LaReau recognizes the emotional challenges patients may face along the way. Through empathy and consistent support, he helps patients stay focused and confident, even when progress feels slow.

For Dr. LaReau, orthopedic surgery is more than a profession—it is an opportunity to restore movement and improve quality of life for every patient he treats.
