For more than 20 years, GI Alliance has been caring for patients across Hinsdale and the western suburbs. As an independent group of physicians, the practice emphasizes a concierge care approach, pairing clinical expertise with a commitment to truly listening to patients. With an in-office endoscopy suite and an expanded physician team, including Dr. Matthew Weiss and Nurse Practitioner Jolene Manuyag, most patients are able to be seen within two weeks for needed services.

Often, the first step is recognizing when something is not quite right. Symptoms like heartburn, changes in bowel habits, or persistent abdominal discomfort are easy to dismiss or attribute to everyday stress. However, these symptoms can signal more serious conditions. “People tend to normalize symptoms that shouldn’t be ignored,” says Dr. Carl Calandra. Chronic heartburn, for example, can be a precursor to Barrett’s Esophagus, which can lead to esophageal cancer. Unexplained weight loss or rectal bleeding are also clear indicators that it is time to see a specialist.

That awareness has become increasingly important as colorectal cancer rates continue to rise, particularly among younger adults. More patients under 50 are being diagnosed earlier, and the incidence is rising steadily. “We are seeing patients younger than ever before, which is why screening matters,” says Dr. Robert Lee. Current guidelines recommend screening beginning at age 45 for those at average risk, with discussions underway about lowering that age further. While noninvasive options such as stool-based tests are available for some patients, they can carry a false positive rate, making colonoscopy the most effective and reliable tool for detection.

For many, hesitation around procedures can delay care. GI Alliance works to change that perception by offering a more streamlined and comfortable experience. “The process today is far more manageable than most people expect,” says Dr. Peter Seraphin. Most visits take about two hours, and patients are typically able to return to normal activities shortly after. Preparation methods have also improved significantly, with more manageable options now available.

Paying attention to digestive health often starts with not ignoring what your body is telling you. At GI Alliance, that begins with a conversation, where providers take time to listen, identify concerns early, and guide patients toward the right next step.
